Went to Yeah Yeah Yeahs Secret Easter Show
Around the NYC music geek scene, this is old news. I'm not a great blogger. I get around to it when I can, four days later. Lazy? Maybe.
I got on the guest list for this last minute show at Santos Party House because my buddy Mishka Shubaly just joined the opening band The Freshkills as their bassist. His first official show is opening for the YYYs. Pretty lucky. I got there at 9:30, just before Freshkills went on. I've liked them since they crashed at my house in Tempe, AZ when I lived there five years ago. Mishka was their temporary bassist with them back then. Their lead singer is a cross between Ian Curtis and Lars from Lars and The Real Girl. I mean that in the best way possible. Imagine that crossbreed fronting a tight art metal band and you have an idea. Great, right? Unquestionably.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs strolled out at 11pm. I’ve seen them at a festival show before and forgot about it. However, up close, in a small venue, they’re really fun to watch. I couldn’t help but smile. Karen O lives up to every bit of her hype. She’s also just as hot in person. Probably hotter. They performed the Cramps cover “Human Fly” and nailed it. They also performed “Art Star,” easily my favorite song of theirs. To see Karen O up in your face, holding the mic in her teeth while banshee screaming into it is an experience anyone with a punk heart should experience.
The above photo is before she ripped off her Asian robe thing to reveal her bondage outfit.
